Summer Travel: Splurge, Staycation, or Spontaneity?

Would you go into debt for a dream trip? We asked thousands of people about their summer travel habits to find out how they really holiday.

When summer arrives, everyone's got travel on the brain, but we don't all do it the same way. Some of us happily spend our hard-earned cash on a dream getaway, while others prefer to stay closer to home. Do we all have every detail planned out or do some of us just wake up and go where the wind takes us? We turned these classic holiday habits into a quick opinion survey to find out what people really think.

Why we ran this survey

We are a world on the move. We travel for work, for leisure, even for healthcare! There’s no right or wrong way to travel, but the choices we make on holiday can say a lot about us. And that's exactly the kind of thing people love to know.

We wanted to explore the questions people really consider when planning a trip: is the experience worth the cost? Is it better to plan every detail or leave room for spontaneity? Does sharing every moment online make a holiday better, or take away some of the magic?

At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is that your holiday makes you happy. This survey is simply a chance to see whether your travel style is shared by the crowd or whether you prefer to march to the beat of your own drum.

What our results say about the way we travel

One of the biggest surprises was social media. Despite living in an age of constant sharing, most people felt that posting their holiday online takes away from the magic of the moment, suggesting that many of us value the experience itself over how it looks to others.

Opinions on whether it's worth going into debt for a dream trip, meanwhile, were far more divided, showing that people balance money and experiences in very different ways.

The bottom line? There's no "right" way to travel. Whether it's choosing a staycation, splurging on a once-in-a-lifetime getaway, or putting the phone down on the beach, the survey shows that the best holiday is the one that makes you happy.
