It comes from the Old English ‘godsibb’ which means a friend or neighbor. ‘A gossip’ then became a byword for anyone who spent time chatting idly with their acquaintances. By the 19th century ‘to gossip’ was to talk about the intimate affairs and rumors surrounding other people. The first gossip columns emerged in the 1930s – the columnists became the bane of the Hollywood stars in that era, much like today!
