Soccer was introduced to France in 1863 when a Scottish newspaper entitled The Scotsman, described a number of Englishman residing in Paris who had started their own football club. Modern soccer was formally introduced nine years later by English sailors playing the game in the port town of Le Havre in 1972. However, it gained in popularity after soldiers returned home after World War I.
