On October 31st of every year, the early Gaelic people would hold a festival at sunset marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, what they referred to as the “darker half” of the year. During this ritual celebration, known as Samhain, bonfires were lit to ensure that the sun would return after the long, dark and cold winter.
