Don Draper is at least partly inspired a real-life ad man from the same era. Draper Daniels was a Chicago-based ad man who was the creative head of Leo Burnett – he invented the Marlboro Man. In 2009, Daniels’ wife wrote a piece about her husband in which she said Weiner acknowledged the similarities.
