Surya Namaskar, also known as the ‘Sun salutations’, is a sequence of asanas. It’s a popular, dynamic sequence used to warm up the body moving into the asanas. Perhaps surprisingly, it is quite likely that this sequence has modern, rather than ancient origins, as Indian gurus were inspired by the Northern European athletic stretches that were taught to the Indian military. This goes to show that yoga is constantly evolving and is not just a one way street!
